ART - Tarnished - The American Dream
Giclee Fine Art Paper - size 28 x 32
This one-of-a-kind piece captures the essence of Mark's story, a man I encountered while exploring near the railroad tracks. Drawn to a pile of discarded bikes, I couldn't resist the opportunity to document this unique scene.
As I approached, I discovered a tent hidden among the bikes where I met Mark. He proved to be an incredibly kind-hearted individual, dedicating himself to helping others in the community by repairing their bikes.During our conversation, Mark opened up about his personal struggles. Once a construction manager, a devastating motorcycle accident left him financially burdened and forced him onto the streets, unable to pay for the medical expenses.
Moved by his story, I felt compelled to purchase some of the tires he had for sale, knowing I wanted to create something meaningful. I doubled his asking price, hoping to make a difference in his life. When I requested to capture photographs of him, Mark hesitated, requesting that I not include his face. He revealed that his wife had abandoned him and used his image to shame him on social media.
I returned to visit Mark several times, only to learn that the neighbors had called the police on him due to the presence of the bikes. He has since moved on from that location, leaving me concerned for his well-being.
Details of the piece:
As I was talking to Mark I noticed the train coming, I saw the American flag and new I had a limited time to capture the right composition.
Notice center left of the piece that I used red, white and blue tires representing the American flag and to balance the flag from the train.
The window was purchased at an antique store in Beaumont, TX.
